Traffic Lights

The traffic light system on food labels with reference intake is a way to help consumers quickly and easily understand the nutritional content of a food product in relation to recommended daily intake levels. This system typically uses colors - green, amber, and red - to indicate whether the amount of a specific nutrient in the product is low, medium, or high compared to the reference intake.

The reference intake values are typically based on guidelines for daily intake of key nutrients such as calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, and salt. The traffic light system then uses these reference intake values to assign a color to each nutrient on the packaging.

For example, if a food product has a high amount of saturated fat compared to the reference intake, it would be labeled with a red traffic light. If it has a low amount, it would be labeled with a green traffic light. The same color-coding system is applied to other key nutrients as well.

By using the traffic light system with reference intake values, consumers can quickly see how a product fits into their daily nutritional needs and make more informed choices about their food purchases. This system helps to promote healthier eating habits and allows consumers to easily compare different products based on their nutritional content.
